Arrows thrash Pearls, while Strikers and Southern Suns end in a draw: Hockey Recap
New South Wales Arrows emerged victorious over Darwin Airport Resort Territory Pearls in the round two of the Women Australian Hockey league (AHL) that took place at the Cairns Hockey Centre.
The NSW played the game quite brilliantly and established their dominance from the start of the game. They scored five goals while holding opponent Darwin Airport goal-less in the two halves.
It was a hot sunny day when both the sides opened the game quite maturely. However, the boring game could not last for long, as Jade Close managed to get into the defensive circle of Darwin Airport in the 23rd minute and struck a powerful drag
flick, opening the score at 1-0. In a matter of three minutes, Megan Rivers, the skipper of the NSW doubled the tally to increase pressure on the opponent team.
After a striking game in the remaining time-period, Jade Close further expanded the NSW lead in the 33rd minute of the match when she scored her second goal of the day.
At the start of the second half, the Darwin Airport demonstrated brilliant defence, but to no avail. The strikers from the Darwin Airport could not show their skills and failed to bring their side into the score net.
Stephanie Purdy scored a couple of goals respectively in the 47th and 63rdminutes to further increase the lead up to five goals. Despite several chances, the Darwin Airport players could not avail the opportunities and lost the game
at 5-0.
The second game between Canberra Strikers and OAMPS Southern Suns was concluded at 2-2 draw played at the Victoria Hockey Centre in Melbourne.
The two teams started the match quite offensively but it was Southern Sun that drew the first blood in the 5th minute of the game. Tess Reynolds made a lengthy run towards the down field and scored first goal for her team.
After the first goal, the speed of the game quite slowed down and both sides started cautious play. At last Canberra Strikers succeeded into their struggle in the 24th minute of the match and had it all level at 1-1. Katie Glynn scored off short
a corner and increased the suspense in the game. At the half time, the two sides held 1-1 deadlock.
In the second half, the Southern Suns started more aggressive play and regained their lead in the 42nd minute when Brooklyn Buchecker scored a goal. However, the opponents were not sitting silently and watching the game go by. Katie Glynn levelled
the score in the 65th minute of the game. The two squads battled hardly in search of go-ahead goal, but to no avail. The game ended in a draw at 2-2.
