Arsenal are title contenders this season: Thomas Vermaelen
Arsenal center-back Thomas Vermaelen is confident that the Gunners will be able to silence their critics this season by winning the Premier League title this season.
Arsenal has not won a major trophy for six seasons, and their last Premier League crown came in 2003-04. That is a real concern for both supporters and the club’s management, considering the talent at Arsenal’s disposal and their ability to play such mesmerising
football as a team. They will however be looking to set the record straight this season.
Arsene Wenger’s squad has always been written off as too young and immature to actually ever contend for the title. However that young squad has had more than enough time to develop and mature, and it seems the time is just right for these youngsters to
show what they are capable of, and justify the manager’s undying trust in them.
There is a strong sense of optimism that is currently floating around the Emirates and the team would want to bring in their first trophy to the trophy cabinet at the new stadium. With Arsenal leading the Barclays Premier League table at the moment, only
positive vibes surround the Gunner's locker rooms.
The Belgian centre-back Thomas Vermaelen is more than capable of being one of the best defenders in the world at this moment in time, and he has officially brushed off any claims about Arsenal not being able to compete with the heavy weights currently dominating
the Premier League. However, the injured defender has missed a large chunk of this season, but his comments should add more spirit to the squad.
Vermaelen told the Evening Standard newspaper, "The spirit in the camp is good. We have a good young group who are very aggressive and want to improve. I think people will always say we can't compete - it is not the first time. But we have to do what we
always do which is work hard and play our own game. Then we can compete. I hope we can compete for the title this year and I'm convinced we will."
The Belgian came into the Arsenal squad last season and has been very impressive ever since. He was a force to be reckoned with, and was arguably one of the best players in the Gunners squad and the Premier League last season. The fact that he is making
such bold statements only means that Arsenal are on a mission to prove a point to anyone and everyone who has doubted them in the past.
Arsenal’s fans should be proud of the way their young squad has performed this season, despite the absence of Thomas Vermaelen. The North London side lead the Premier League table with Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur all
trailing behind.
Most Arsenal fan’s will also be more then delighted if the team manages to end the trophy drought at the club this season, but like always everyone will just have to wait and see how things go at  the club in the next few months.
