Arsenal beat by Everton 1-0 at Goodison Park, in a Premier League match to move to the third spot as Tottenham Hotspur were held at White Hart Lane by Stoke City.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Thomas-Vermaelen-c35002 scored in the 8th minute for the Gunners, which proved to be enough for the visitors to come out with three points from the game.
Arsenal started the match strongly, with http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Aaron-Ramsey-c3065 taking on an early opportunity but his shot from inside the penalty area went over the crossbar.
However, in the eighth minute, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Robin-van-Persie-c31380 took an in-swinging corner from the right and Vermaelen nodded home to put the Gunners in front at Goodison Park.
Van Persie and Ramsey came close to scoring again for the Londoner’s but their efforts were saved by Everton’s goal-keeper, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Tim-Howard-c35095.
However, the home side pushed forward in the second half as they looked to grab the equalizer, but they were unable to create clear goal scoring opportunities. The Gunner’s defence stood firm, hardly allowing any space for the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Everton-c13019 strikers. The Toffees
only managed to get a single shot on target throughout the match, when http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Wojciech-Szczesny-c36998.
But the home side fell victim to a poor refereeing decision when the linesman waved his flag at http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Royston-Drenthe-c31824 for an off-side, after the player had put the ball in the back of the net. The Everton players were frustrated at the linesman’s decision and
replays suggested that Drenthe was in an on-side position.
Other than that, there was no slip up from the visitors as they dominated the play for long intervals and created more chances than their opponents. The win helped Arsenal overtake Tottenham, who were held 1-1 by Stoke City, as they claimed the third spot.
It was also the Gunner’s sixth straight victory in the Premier League.
The Arsenal boss, Arsene Wenger lauded his team’s brilliant performance against Everton and their ability to hold on to the lead in a crucial game.
“Second-half, for the most we did hang on, until the last 15 minutes we started to create chances again, but it was all Everton. We were resilient, focused with a great desire to defend and our defence played very well tonight.” He said in the post-match
interview.
Arsenal were tottering in the bottom half of the table at the start of the season. Since then, Wenger’s side has made a spirited recovery with the Londoner’s now looking to be in good shape to finish in the top four.
“That shows you that things change quickly in this league and so that’s why for us it’s vital to keep our focus." He added.
