Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger says Gunners have moved on from their Carling Cup disappointment
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has claimed that the Gunners have put their Carling cup disappointment behind them. Wenger’s comments come in the wake of Arsenal’s 5-0 thrashing of Leyton Orient in their FA Cup fifth-round second leg encounter at the Emirates
Stadium.
Arsenal had suffered a huge blow to their confidence last week, losing 2-1 to Birmingham City in the final of the Carling Cup. The defeat was made more painful due to the fact that the Gunners had not won a major trophy in almost seven years. Last Sunday’s
final represented a fantastic chance for Arsenal to finally end their long-standing trophy drought; however, they stumbled at the finish line yet again.
However, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes that his side has the mental toughness to overcome their defeat in the Carling Cup final, something that the Gunners proved emphatically with their 5-0 thumping of Leyton Orient in the FA Cup.
Speaking after the match, Arsene Wenger said, “It was important, of course, that we had a response after what happened over the weekend. We did it in a professional way; we always focused and didn't give them any chances.”
He added, “If you look back we have a long run of positive results but it was important that we did not let ourselves down to give us a good chance to focus on the coming weeks.”
Wegner is right to play up the importance of the victory. Arsenal have fixtures against Sunderland in the Premier League, Barcelona in the Champions League, and Manchester United in the FA Cup coming up. The Gunners have no time to feel sorry for themselves.
They must instead be fully focused on the games ahead if they are to have a chance of ending their trophy drought, something Arsene Wenger is aware of.
Arsenal are currently in second place in the Premier League standings, four points behind leaders Manchester United. To make things even more interesting, the Gunners are also within touching distance of the FA Cup and Champions League crowns.
