Arsenal close to agreeing a new long-term contract with Jack Wilshere and Wojciech Szczesny
Arsenal’s wonder boy, Jack Wilshire’s current contract expires in 2013 but talks are already under way between Arsenal and his agent.
Jack Wilshere was banned for three matches for his rigorous tackle on Nikola Zigic, when Arsenal played Birmingham City at Emirates last weekend. Wilshere missed two of Arsenal’s crucial matches, against Manchester City and Newcastle United. Jack Wilshere
will also not feature in today’s match against West Ham United.
The English midfielder of Arsenal has been in tremendous form, he has also managed to engrave his name in the starting eleven of Arsenal. The 18-year-old midfielder has appeared twelve times for the Gunners so for, in which he managed seven assists and one
goal.
Lately, Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, has compared Jack Wilshere to both Liam Brady and Wayne Rooney. Jack Wilshere is set to sign a contract that will make him among the highest paid 18-year-olds in football history.
Wenger said: “We are confident that we will sign Jack very quickly. We hope that we can announce that soon. He has had a great start to the season. There is a touch of Brady about him.”
While comparing Wilshere to Rooney, Arsene Wenger said his young gun was someone who was just desperate to get more playing time. Wenger said: “They have the same confidence. Where you see that is in the big games. He wants the ball.”
Arsene Wenger is also hoping that his young Polish keeper Wojciech Szczesny would also sign new contract with Arsenal.
Wojciech Szczesny featured recently against Newcastle United in a Carling Cup match which Arsenal won by four goals to nil. Szczesny has been very impressive for the Gunners, he played two senior matches for Arsenal and both of the times managed to keep
clean sheets. Wojciech Szczesny is widely regarded as the Arsenal’s outstanding long-term goalkeeping prospect.
Indeed, with Fabianski starting to establish himself as first choice keeper since Almunia’s injury, there is hope that the goalkeeping problem may just be resolving itself at the Emirates.
In the absence of Arsenal first choice keeper, Wenger said that Fabianski was his number one goalkeeper but admitted that it is a position he needs to settle.
Arsenal manager said: “You have to make a choice because you cannot play in goal and feel that every mistake you make, you are out. Fabianski always felt that if he could get a run of games, then he could show how good he is. He always felt it was only
one game and he felt under pressure and now he is a bit more relaxed. The confidence problem is a very interesting subject in top-level sport. You feel it goes quickly and comes back slowly.”
