Arsenal defender Kieran Gibbs ruled out for several weeks

English Premier League giants Arsenal have received a fresh injury blow with the news that left-back Kieran Gibbs will be out of action for the next few weeks.

The young defender limped off the pitch 18 minutes into the 4-0 League Cup victory over Newcastle United on Wednesday, 27 October, after suffering an injury to his medial knee ligament.

A scan on the joint will take place on Friday, but the 21-year-old England international is not expected to be out of action for more than a few weeks.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger told the club’s official website on Thursday that: “We lost Kieran Gibbs last night.  That is the bad news.  It is a medial knee ligament strain. It needs to be checked on the scan tomorrow but (he will be out for) a few weeks.”
Van Persie and Ramsey edge closer to return

Meanwhile, Wenger is hopeful that he will soon be able to call on the talents of Robin van Persie and Aaron Ramsey.

Striker Van Persie has been sidelined since picking up an ankle injury in the 2-1 win over Blackburn Rovers on 28 August, while midfielder Ramsey has been out since suffering a broken leg after a tackle by Ryan Shawcross in a match against Stoke City in February.

Both players should return to training next week, but it is likely to be several weeks before Ramsey is ready for a return to the first team.

Wenger said that: “Van Persie and Ramsey are very close to coming back to full training now.  They should be back in the group at the end of next week. Of course we should not set the same (recovery) time to Ramsey as Van Persie. Aaron will need a longer period
to be completely match-fit for the first team. But Van Persie is not far away now.”

Arsenal also have goalkeeper Manuel Almunia and defender Thomas Vermaelen on the sidelines due to their respective elbow and Achilles injuries. Abou Diaby will miss the match against West Ham United on Saturday with an ankle injury while Jack Wilshere is suspended
for the game.
