Arsenal legend, Bob Wilson, revealed that Arsene Wenger tried to sign http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 goalkeeper Pepe Reina last summer
Arsenal legendary goalkeeper and coach, Bob http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Pepe-Reina-c29672, in the transfer window of summer 2010.
Wilson said, “Arsene tried like mad to buy not only a goalkeeper but what he considered to be the most consistent in the country, so he made a big bid for Pepe Reina. That didn't come out because that's not Arsene Wenger's way of doing it and it's not Arsenal's
way of doing it, but he did attempt to do that”.
Arsenal has been fighting with the goalkeeping problems since the departure of highly successful, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jens-Lehmann-c18297.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Lukasz-Fabianski-c22910 unreliability had cost Arsenal a lot in the past.
Arsene Wenger was not at all happy with the performances of his both first and second choice keepers and tried to bring a new goalie in the 2010 summer transfer window.
It was rumoured that Arsenal was linked with Liverpool number-one shirt holder, Pepe Reina, who was named the best goalkeeper in the Barclays Premier League in the 2009 season.
Along with Pepe Reina, Arsene Wenger was also publicly linked with Fulham first choice goalkeeper, Mark Schwarzer. Despite being in talks for over more than two months, the deal failed to go through, as Schwarzer decided to stay at Fulham and Arsenal was
once again left with Manuel Almunia and Lukasz Fabianski.
Manuel Almunia had a good start of the ongoing 2010-11 season and gave some extraordinary performances in the first few matches.
However, Arsenal dealt a huge blow when Almunia made three crucial mistakes in a same game against West Bromwich Albion, which the Gunners lost by 3-2 and it was also their first home defeat of the ongoing 2010-11 season.
Since then, Almunia was snubbed and Lukasz Fabianski was given the chance to prove his worth.
The Polish had an excellent start and looked very stable and confident. Unfortunately, Fabianski suffered a shoulder injury and underwent a surgery, which ruled him out for the rest of the season.
Arsene Wenger, then, called on his young third choice keeper, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Wojciech-Szczesny-c36998.
Despite losing against Manchester United on his debut, Szczesny proved to be the only answer of Arsenal goalkeeping problems. The 20-year-old keeper has been a revelation at Arsenal this season and already become a first choice keeper.
Bob Wilson, who has been a goalkeeping coach for 30 years, believes that Wojciech Szczesny is the future of Arsenal and claims that if Pepe Reina would have been signed then Arsene Wenger would have lost Szczesny.
Wilson said, “I think he would have lost, without any doubt, the young kid Szczesny, who I believe is going to be the future. It's most unfortunate he has had this injury and in the game that he had it, but I happen to think Szczesny is going to be a great
goalkeeper. The boy is ready now - you ask Arsenal fans”.
