Arsenal legend Martin Keown calls for summer spending – English Premier League news
Arsenal legend, Martin Keown, believes that manager Arsene Wenger has to bring in reinforcements in the summer transfer window if the Gunners are to have any chance of ending their long-standing trophy drought next season.
Arsenal’s strong start to the ongoing 2010/11 season once again ended in heartbreak, as the Gunners look set to end the campaign with nothing to show for their efforts. Much of the damage was done in a two-week interval, which saw Arsenal crash out of three
cup competitions.
The downward spiral started after the London club’s defeat to Birmingham City in the final of the Carling Cup. It was a blow that the Gunners never fully recovered from. That loss was followed by their UEFA Champions League exit, and then the FA Cup quarter-final
defeat to Manchester United.
A run of draws in the run-in to the Barclays Premier League season saw their last remaining hope of winning silverware vanish completely, and Arsenal are now set to end their sixth consecutive season without a trophy.
Former Arsenal man, Martin Keown, believes that Arsenal are more than capable of filling the void in their trophy cabinet, but he claims that manager Arsene Wenger will have to spend money on strengthening his squad once the summer transfer window rolls
around.
Speaking on the matter, Keown said, “You have to feel there will be changes. I think Arsene Wenger has almost over-estimated what they (the current squad) are capable of and they have let him down, so it is a shared responsibility when the team does not
do well and collective praise when they do. I am sure everyone will look at themselves, and that they will bounce back.”
He added, "http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429 are not far away it is not all doom and gloom with the right collection of players with experience and strength of leadership, then I think Arsenal can win something next season."
Arsenal look set to finish the Barclays Premier League season in third place. They currently have 67 points to their name.
