Arsenal look to shore up shaky defence
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is looking to strengthen the Gunners back line further by making a cut-price move for Roma’s centre back, Phillipe Mexes. The move could take place as early as January, with the player already having hinted at the possibility
of making a move to the Premier League.
Arsene Wenger has lately admitted to being concerned about his side’s defensive problems through suspensions and injuries, such as the Achilles knock picked up by centre-half Thomas Vermaelen, which has kept him out of the squad for over two months. Wenger
is ready to splurge some cash on a quality central defender as soon as January.
Mexes will be available on a free transfer this summer, when his contract expires with Roma. That means Wenger might be able to land the Frenchman for a bargain, which could see him make the move to the Emirates at the turn of the year.
Mexes told reporters he was open to all proposals and also praised the Premier League, “The Premier League is one of the best in the world. It is the most publicised, with the greatest players in the world. It’s very exciting. It makes you want to go there.”
The 28-year-old, who was rated at around eight million pounds, could make the move for as low as four or even five million to the North London side. That along with the fact that the player has already gone public with his come and get me plea, means that
the possibility of a move going through are higher than ever.
Mexes, who has also represented France on the international stage, has more than enough experience to help Arsenal steer their ship on course to land their first title in more than five seasons.
It is also a move that would not only benefit the club, but also the player. Mexes has lately fallen out of favor at Roma, and a move to the Emirates could re-spark his international career.
