Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger considers emergency signing
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has hinted that the latest injury to his defender Sebastien Squillaci may force his hand into buying someone as cover in the winter transfer window.
Arsenal is to face Ipswich town in the semifinal of the Carling Cup first leg away from home on Wednesday, and they have just two recognized defenders to choose from. Squillaci suffered an unfortunate hamstring injury in the 1-1
draw against Leeds in the FA cup tie on the weekend.
Arsene Wenger admitted that if http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Johan-Djourou-c18779.
Wenger, who has been linked with a move for Bolton's http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Gary-Cahill-c14439, said: "If we only have two centre-backs then that cannot work with the number of centre-backs we have."
Arsene Wenger had clearly stated before the Leeds game that the FA Cup is not on top in his list of priorities, and he would not mind sacrificing the cup for the bigger interests of the club. However, Wenger was in return handed
an extra match as a result of the 1-1 draw and would now have to play a replay at the home of Leeds. Wenger already has his hands full with a fight for the title more likely in last 5 seasons, and a tough 2 legged UEFA Champions league knockout tie coming
up next month. It sure is a very congested schedule for Wenger and he may have to go for some emergency signings in order to get through the tough period.
Arsenal should have done much better against Leeds and they did have number of good chances at the start to get ahead. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Andrei-Arshavin-c5771 should have put his side ahead in the 11th minute of the game but his shot was well
wide. Had Arsenal taken half of their chances it would have been a whole different outcome and Wenger’s team could have avoided an extra match. After the match, Arshavin was the topic of debate in many corners and the commitment of the Russian was under question.
The attacking midfielder is at times brilliant but on other occasions looks aloof from what goes on in his surroundings. Wenger, however, defended his big signing from last season, and said that there is no doubt about his commitment and he is sure that he
would get back to his best when the big games come around.
The draw against Leeds came on back of a goalless draw in the Premier League against Manchester City, where Arsenal lost 2 crucial points and remained on 3rd
place in the table. After the FA Cup game there were some boos and show of dissent by the home fans.
Wenger said that the fans expect nothing but the best from their team, and lack of results does bring about frustration.
"The fans are demanding. We were not consistent technically and so they picked on our inconsistencies. It is not through a lack of desire with Arshavin. He wants to do well. He took one touch too many with his first chance and
the keeper did well to save another shot he had.”
Wenger, who guided Arsenal to the memorable season in 2003-2004 where Arsenal won the League crown without losing a single game, said that he may go for couple of short-term signings but looking at the bigger picture he has what
he needs.
