Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger happy with his side’s show of character – Football news
Arsenal’s manager, Arsene Wenger has heaped praise on his side and the way they performed in the second half of the season, as they went on to climb up the table and secure a fourth spot finish.
“I'm proud of the character and the spirit from these players, after all we had to deal with the season. They are special. I said that many times but they have shown it - in the last two months they have been exceptional,” said the Arsenal boss. “It's a
good basis for the longer term to go into next season following such a strong run and I'm proud given we were very far behind Tottenham after the defeat there.”
The win against Newcastle United on the last day of the season gave the team the three points that they needed to clinch a fourth spot. Even though Tottenham Hotspur went on to win their game, they fell short of Arsenal by one point.
This is something that the Gunners will remember for a long time, since there was a seven point difference between Tottenham and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429 earlier in the season, and this resulted in most Spurs fans being very confident that their side would finish in the
top four.
He said, “Everybody ruled us out but we have ruled us out but we have shown character and attitude and came back. We reached 73 points – that's three points better than last season.”
However, a win in eight of their last ten games, which was met by an eleven match unbeaten run was all that it took for the Gunners to leapfrog their local rivals and claim a Champions League spot for the seventeenth season in a row.
Given the way the season shaped up for the team, which saw http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Robin-van-Persie-c31380 leave the team, it is an achievement which not many thought possible.
Wenger also went on to highlight the fact that this season, the Gunners scored three points more than last season, which is something that should be taken into account, when reviewing the club’s performances.
Nonetheless, the Gunners should now build on this success, and mount a title challenge in the coming season, in order to truly prove their worth.
