Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger hints at no defensive reinforcements being signed in January – Premier League Update
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has gone on to hint that there might not be any defensive reinforcements coming into the Emirates in the January transfer window.
The manager seems to be more than happy with the way his side has been defending over the last couple of weeks and wants to see his current roster of players develop, instead of bringing in new signings.
As a result, it seems like Bolton defender http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Gary-Cahill-c14439 might not be heading to the North London club, despite nearly everyone believing the player to be on his way to the Emirates.
Cahill is set to be without a contract at the end of the current season and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429 were previously hailed as the favourites to land the defender. However, it now seems like Wenger has developed a great deal of confidence in his squad and is willing to stick
with what he has, instead of opting to bring in new faces at the club.
When talking about Cahill, Wenger is quoted to have said: "Cahill is good enough to play Champions League, but he is not someone I would be interested in"
The manager then went on to admit that he has five centre backs who are capable of running the show for the team and as a result, there is no space to bring in new faces. At the same time, the manager went on to state Bolton were greedy in the summers and
hence they might end up losing their star defender for a whole lot less than what Arsenal offered.
"I have got five central defenders - [Laurent] Koscielny, [Sebastien] Squillaci, [Per] Mertesacker, [Thomas] Vermaelen and [Johan] Djourou. Of this five, four are international players.
"We were in the market in the summer, but at that time they [Bolton] were greedy."
Nonetheless, the manager did not rule out the prospect of making signings in the summers altogether. The manager has stated that should a number of injuries occur to his squad members, then he would have no option, but to go shopping in the winter transfer
window.
"In football you rule very few things out, because it depends if you have seven injuries until January.”
At the moment, many experts believe Arsenal need to bring in a replacement winger or two, given the fact that apart from http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Gervinho-c14755 and Walcott, the remaining wingers at the squad are not up to the mark just yet.
It is now a wait to see just what Wenger decides to do in January.
