Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere still hopeful of ending trophy drought at Emirates
Arsenal midfielder http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jack-Wilshere-c17463 has insisted that the Gunners can still end their 6-year trophy drought despite crashing out of the UEFA Champions League after suffering a 3-1 defeat against Barcelona at Nou Camp recently.
He said, “We are still in two competitions and need to get a trophy this year that will be the aim. We have still got the championship; we are just three points behind and with a game in hand. We go to Manchester United in the FA Cup on Saturday and we have
to pick ourselves up to get the win there. We never give up, that is the spirit of Arsenal.”
At one stage, Arsenal were the only team in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749 which was contesting in four different competitions: the UEFA Champions League, Barclays Premier League, FA Cup and Carling Cup.
The Gunners’ were handed a golden opportunity to end their trophy drought in the shape of the Carling Cup final against Birmingham City. However, Arsenal failed to stand up to the occasion and a late mix-up between Gunners’ keeper and defender gifted Birmingham
City the League Cup.
Arsenal were also plying their trade in the UEFA Champions League until they were knocked out by Barcelona. The Gunners finished second behind Shakhtar Donetsk in their Champions League group and were drawn against Barcelona for the competition’s round of
16 clash.
Arsene Wenger’s men managed to win the first leg against the Catalan giants, after they won the match 2-1. However, a one goal lead did not prove sufficient in the return leg and Barcelona knocked them out for the second consecutive season after winning
the match at Nou Camp by 3-1.
Arsenal are now left with only two competitions: the Barclays Premier League and FA Cup. The Gunners are the only team remaining to rival League leaders Manchester United for the ongoing 2010-11 season’s Premier League crown. Wenger’s men are currently placed
second in the League, 3 points behind Manchester United and also have a game in hand.
Moreover, Arsenal’s FA Cup fate will also be decided this weekend when they lock horns with Manchester United in the quarterfinal of the competition. If Arsenal manage to win at Old Trafford, then they have a huge chance of making it through to the final
of the tournament.
