Arsenal midfielder out for one month
Arsenal midfielder Samir Nasri is set to spend a month on the sidelines after undergoing minor knee surgery today. The France international sustained an injury to his meniscus in Sunday’s 1-1 English Premier League draw against Liverpool which required an operation to correct.
A statement on Arsenal’s official website said that: "Arsenal midfielder Samir Nasri will today [Wednesday] undergo minor surgery on his knee following a meniscal injury sustained during the match against Liverpool on Sunday. Nasri, who has been in impressive form, will be out of action for a month."
Blow for Gunners boss
The news will come as a blow for Gunners boss Arsene Wenger who is already operating with a severely depleted midfield. Alexandre Song is out with a calf problem, Denílson Pereira Neves is suffering from a abdominal complaint while Aaron Ramsey is recovering from a double leg break sustained in a challenge by Stoke City defender Ryan Shawcross in February. Meanwhile, captain Cesc Fabregas missed the opening fixture at Anfield due to illness.
Nasri also missed the start of the 2009-10 English Premier League season after breaking the fibula in his right leg during pre-season training. His latest injury troubles could mean that the 23-year old will miss the first of Arsenal’s UEFA Champions League group stage matches as well as France’s 2012 UEFA European Championship qualifying clashes against Belarus and Bosnia and Hercegovina.
The midfielder started out his career with Marseille after progressing through the youth ranks with his hometown club. He made 162 appearances for the club in total and scored 11 goals in his four seasons at first-team level. He was also named the Ligue 1 young player of the year in the 2006-07 season before making the switch to North London in 2008.
Nasri got his EPL career off to a flying start as he scored just four minutes into his debut against West Bromwich Albion. In 79 games in total for Arsenal, the creative midfielder has scored 12 goals and provided ten assists.
