Arsenal striker Robin van Persie claims the Gunners are not good enough – EPL news
Arsenal striker http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Robin-van-Persie-c31380 has insisted that the Gunners are not good enough to win any silverware in the ongoing 2010-11 season.
The Dutch striker expressed his disappointment over being knocked out of three cup competitions but has urged his teammates to give their best performances in the upcoming matches in order to win the Premier League title.
Persie said, “We always do our best and of course we always want to win. On a number of times we were very close, but at the last moment it's often not good enough and that's the reality.”
“It's very frustrating when you lose, especially when we're so close, but we have to look forward and now it's up to us to change all that. I firmly believe in the team, Arsenal and myself, and I'm positive we will win prizes,” added the Dutch striker.
Arsenal have not won a single piece of silverware in last six years and their last trophy was FA Cup in 2005, when they defeated Manchester United on penalties. Moreover, Arsenal’s famous ‘Invincibles’ were the last team that won the Premier League title
seven seasons ago.
Recently, Arsenal were the only team in Europe, which was contesting in four different competitions, the UEFA Champions League, Barclays Premier League, FA Cup and Carling Cup.
The Gunners were handed a golden opportunity to win a trophy, as they had to defeat Premier League minnows Birmingham City in the final of the Carling Cup. However, Arsenal failed to rise to the occasion and a mix-up between their keeper and defender in
the dying stages of the match gifted the League Cup trophy to Alex McLeish’s men.
Moreover, despite marking a historic win over Barcelona in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League knockout round, Arsenal once again failed to perform at Nou Camp and were knocked out of the competition after suffering a 3-1 defeat against the Spanish
giants.
Most recently, Arsenal crashed out of the FA Cup after enduring an embarrassing 2-0 defeat against Manchester United at Old Trafford in the quarter-finals. The Gunners’ hopes of ending their trophy drought are now solely dependent on the Premier League title.
Arsene Wenger’s men are strongly positioned second in the League standings, only five points behind Manchester United. They also have a game in hand. However, Arsenal missed out on a precious opportunity to go on level with Manchester United as they only
managed to get a draw against West Bromwich Albion recently.
The Gunners are yet to play Manchester United in the Premier League at Emirates, which is being tipped as the title-deciding fixture.
