West Bromwich Albion have reportedly gained the upper hand in landing Arsenal target Tongo Doumbia from French club Rennes.
The Birmingham club are believed to be in pole position to sign the midfielder from Rennes after he expressed a desire to join them.
Arsenal had been keeping an eye on the 22-year old midfielder from http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Mali-c2951 as Arsene Wenger looked to bolster his midfield. However, the player believes that first team opportunities with the Gunners will be rare and few, and has instead opted for a move to
the Hawthorns.
Doumbia believes a move to West Brom will be good for his career and that he will be able to play more first team football with the club.
The midfielder began his career in 1999 with Olympique Noisy-le-Sec, moved to city rivals JS Noisy-le-Sec and then returned to his former club after one year. The midfielder then applied his trade in Ligue 2 with French club LB Chateauroux before signing
for Rennes and making a move up to the French Ligue 1.
He is now set to fly to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749 for talks with the Baggies in order to finalise his move to the Premier League.
"I felt more desire there [at West Brom]," the 22-year-old said. "Obviously, it is less glamorous than http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429 but I'll be able to continue my progress. I will have more chances to play.”
"This [the Premier League] is a championship that thrills everybody. I hope this is the beginning of a great adventure."
West Brom have already signed 22-year old Belgian international Yassine El Ghanassy from Gent. The winger joined the team on a season-long deal and the club are looking to convert the loan deal into a permanent one by the end of the season.
The versatile forward is known for his exceptional dribbling skills and the ability to play on either flank as well as up front. El-Ghanassy and Doumbia will both prove to be important signings for West Brom as they prepare for the new Premier League season.
Earlier this week, West Brom boss Steve Clarke admitted that next season will be a difficult one for the Baggies because of the nature and intensity of the competition in the league, but is hopeful that the club can build on last season’s success and finish
higher up on the league table.
