Arsenal target 'in form defender' Emir Spahic
Montpellier defender, Emir Spahic has apparently claimed that Arsenal are currently negotiating a contract to capture the player.
Arsene Wenger had on previous occasions confirmed the fact that he was looking to bring at least one or two more defenders into the squad. He plans on doing so before the transfer window closes next month. Recent reports that have flown in suggest that one of the defenders he would be looking to sign in is Spahic. The player is currently twenty nine years old but is still a possible target.
In a recent interview Spahic was reported to have said, “The most important thing is that so far the negotiations go as planned and that the transfer could be completed soon,”“Arsenal is a great club, I’m an admirer of Arsene Wenger and I hope that Montpellier will cooperate.”
Spahic currently plays for Bosnia and Herzegovina and is also the captain on the team. He is currently employed by Montpellier until 2014. However he would greatly cherish the opportunity to play for a team as great as Arsenal.
According to most sources the deal is as good as done. If this deal does happen to go through as reported then Arsene Wenger would be breathing a sigh of relief. This would be due to the fact that he would have finally gotten that defensive cover that he had been trying to get for so long. The Bosnian player might not be a house hold name yet but he has said he will try his level best to become one. He has managed to find a large number of admirers during his term at Montpelier. He also recently gained more fame due to the efforts he put into trying to get his national team of Bosnia to try to reach the finals. His efforts almost paid off by Bosnia just barely missed out on the final World Cup spot.
The fee that is being rumoured to sign the player, is somewhere around the eight million pound mark. It might seem high for a rather unknown player who is currently twenty nine years old. However the fact that Thomas Vermaelen was also a relatively unknown name when brought into Arsenal, this deal might just be better than most people expect.
What this means for Arsenal is that they now can turn their attention to looking to recruit a goal keeper. Wenger was first mainly focused on finding an extra solid player to play at the back, but it seems like he might have found just the right man for the job.
Arsenal were lacking in defence all of last season, with most of the defenders getting injured left and right. Wenger might have signed one player but he has recently admitted to the fact that he needed at least two or three more. Those two or three players are without a doubt going to be defensive players along with one of those players being a world class keeper.
Almunia looks to be on his way out of the club and Gallas and Silvestre have already left. Which means that there is an immediate need to replace those players along with getting some extras. Spahic would be one of those replacements but, that means Arsenal would still be looking for at least two more players. No one is quite sure who those two players would be. They could either be completely unknown names like the one on Spahic or players like Buffon who had been previously linked with a move to the club in the past.
Whatever the case is, the future definitely looks bright at Arsenal.
