Arsenal teach Blackpool a Premier League lesson
Theo Walcott scored a hat-trick for Arsenal as Blackpool lost 6-0 at the Emirates.
Walcott missed out on a call-up for England at this year’s World Cup and proved his critics wrong today by terrorising the Blackpool defence, whose cause was not helped when Ian Evatt was sent off in the first half.
Arsenal scored six and could have scored more. New signing Marouane Chamakh scored his first goal for Arsenal, while Andrey Arshavin and Abou Diaby added to Walcott’s contributions.
Elsewhere, Tottenham Hotspur beat Stoke City 2-1 thanks to two goals from Gareth Bale, with the second a beautiful volley. But Stoke will feel aggrieved with referee Chris Foy as they had a goal ruled out, even though the ball had clearly crossed the line. The Stoke players felt they had equalised and made their feelings clear at the end of the match, surrounding Foy.
Craig Gardner scored two rare goals in a game as his side Birmingham City beat Blackburn 2-1. Blackburn took the lead when Steven N’Zonzi scored on 53 minutes, but three minutes later Gardner put his side level. Birmingham keeper Ben Foster tremendously saved a penalty from Morten Gamst Pedersen as well to ensure the three points.
Sylvan Ebanks-Blake secured a point for Wolverhampton Wanderers against Everton at Goodison Park, cancelling out Tim Cahill’s goal for Everton in the first half. Meanwhile, West Bromwich Albion new boy Peter Odemwingie scored 10 minutes from time to give his side all three points against Sunderland.
West Ham’s troubles continued as they suffered a 3-1 home defeat to Owen Coyle’s Bolton Wanderers. Johan Elmander scored twice and Matthew Upson scored an own goal, as West Ham missed a penalty at 0-0. They did score from the penalty spot after they were awarded a second penalty, Mark Noble pulling a goal back.
Wigan and Chelsea play this evening at 5.15 GMT
