The North London side Arsenal had the unluckiest season this time round. As the season started, Arsenal were lagging far behind http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 and Manchester United. However, later they managed to catch up and became the only side which could compete against the
Red Devils.
Arsene Wenger’s men showed great composure for most of the season and even though they were not the favourites, they came closest to winning the Premier league. They found it hard to beat Sir http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Alex-c4752 Ferguson’s men in the first half of the season but they were
the only challengers for the Premier League glory.
The season started off slow for the Gunners. They drew the game against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809; a side which looked to be very strong when the season kicked off.
With a comparatively young and inexperienced squad, Arsene Wenger helped his side take on four competitions. Even though the Gunners were not the favourites to win even a single trophy, they still managed to surprise the football lovers with their beautiful
passing football.
While playing for the Premier League title, Arsenal entered the FA Cup, the UEFA Champions League and the Carling Cup. They North London side became a part of these four competitions and soon became one of the favourites to win at least one of the four.
The Gunners had an inexperienced squad compared to all the other teams. Arsene Wenger relied too much on the young players and expected the defender http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Thomas-Vermaelen-c35002 to recover for this season. However, the centre back could not make a return for his Achilles
injury.
Arsenal, like always, had their injury crises. However, Arsene Wenger tried to evade this problem by signing a few players. The French tactician bought the Bordeaux striker http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Robin-van-Persie-c31380
was returning from a long run in the FIFA World Cup and he needed rest; therefore, Wenger decided to buy a striker in order to replace Robin Van Persie for the start of the season.
Two defenders were also bought – http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Laurent-Koscielny-c21742 and Sebastian Squillaci. Both these centre backs were taken into consideration because of Arsenal’s weak defensive play throughout the previous season. The North London side found it hard to defend even
against average teams. Therefore, Arsene Wenger decided not to take any chances with the defensive line.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Philippe-Senderos-c29952 also joined Fulham and left the Arsenal squad. The Frenchman Mikael Silvestre also left the English club and joined the
German side Werder Bremen. The centre back http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Sol-Campbell-c33757 also left the North London side and joined Newcastle.
The Croatian striker http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Eduardo-c12034 was being a flop in Arsenal and Wenger was not really looking forward to keep him in his first team. Therefore, Eduardo was shown the doors and he joined the Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk.
The goalkeeper http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Wojciech-Szczesny-c36998 and managed to make a good impact in the first team. He stood guard between the two poles for most of the season and saved Arsenal many a times.
