Arsenal’s Jens Lehmann drops hints of a contract extension – English Premier League news
Arsenal goalkeeper, Jens Lehmann, has revealed that he might be staying at Emirates Stadium beyond the ongoing 2010/11 Barclays Premier League campaign. The German was signed by the Gunners on a temporary basis back in March to help the team cope with a
crippling injury crisis.
The German’s return to his former employers was triggered by injuries to Arsenal goalkeepers, Wojciech Szczęsny and Łukasz Fabiański. It left manager, Arsene Wenger, with just one match-ready shot-stopper at his disposal, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Manuel-Almunia-c23386. The Frenchman needed
more insurance between the sticks and he saw the answer to his problems in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jens-Lehmann-c18297. It is something that Lehmann could never have predicted when he retired from football last year.
The deal was never meant to be a permanent one. The German’s new contract with Arsenal was set to expire by the end of the current Barclays Premier League campaign, but Lehmann has now dropped hints that he might be extending his stay at the Emirates Stadium.
Asked to comment on his perceived ‘comeback’, Lehmann said, “It was not really a comeback, but more of a last resort - actually more of a hobby. I took three weeks to get really fit - and then I had to play against Blackpool. I thought 'You can do it still.
It is not forgotten'. From my performance I would be able to continue playing. My teammates are always asking me if I'll still be here next season."
It seems unlikely that Arsene Wenger would resort to using the German on a permanent basis, especially since first-choice goalkeeper, Wojciech Szczęsny, is back to full match-fitness. The youngster has continually impressed this season, and he looks set
to establish himself as a valuable member of the squad in the months and years to come.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429 are currently in fourth place in the Barclays Premier League standings. The Gunners are gearing up for their final match of the campaign, and they will need at least a victory to keep alive their slim hopes of ending the season in third place.
