Arsenal striker Robin van Persie has hailed the growth of Liverpool’s talismanic striker Andy Carroll and has compared the striker to the legendary former Newcastle United forward, Alan Shearer.
Carroll, who became the most expensive British player when Liverpool paid £35 million to sign him from Newcastle United, has been heavily compared to Sheared as they both have been a part of same club, Newcastle United.
Van Persie has claimed that Carroll has all the attributes and skills to emulate Alan Shearer’s success in the Barclays Premier League and said, “He's [Carroll] very strong and reminds me of Alan Shearer in style - holding the ball well, heading it strongly,
moving nicely and looking lively in the box."
Carroll had scored a winner against Arsenal at Emirates when the towering striker headed the ball from Joey Barton’s set-piece to secure all three points for Newcastle United at North London. The Gunners captain has now hailed Carroll’s performance at Emirates
last season and has insisted that Arsenal would have to defend flawlessly in order to keep the 22-year-old quite.
"We've seen what Carroll can do before - he scored the winner here for Newcastle last season. We'll need to be on our guard against him," the Dutch striker added.
The Merseyside club have been strongly tipped to earn UEFA Champions League qualification this season after finishing below fourth for the two past seasons. However, Van Persie believes that Kenny Dalglish’s squad has the quality and depth to mount a strong
challenge for the Barclays premier League title this season.
The 28-year-old stated: "I rate them as title contenders every year, and they look strong this time around.”
The Gunners captain hailed Liverpool’s performance in the opening day draw against Sunderland and has stated that the Reds were unlucky not to win the game.
"I've seen highlights of their match against Sunderland last week, and they seemed unlucky not to win - although I have to say Sunderland looked decent too,” the Arsenal skipper concluded.
