Arsenal's Theo Walcott says Wayne Rooney is worth every penny of his big-money deal
Arsenal winger Theo Walcott claims that his England team-mate Wayne Rooney is worth every penny of his new contract with Manchester United, reported to be worth £250,000 per week.
The 25-year-old striker penned the lucrative deal just two days after announcing his intention to leave the Red Devils, and has been struggling to find his best form and fitness this season.
However, Walcott has defended the attacker, claiming that he will once again find the level of performance which saw him lauded as one of the finest players on the planet. The winger also said that Rooney can get even better.
He told The Sun that: “(Rooney has) worked hard since he was a really young age and he's Man United's best player, so why not pay him big money? To stay in England, with one of the best managers in the Premier League, he's only going to get better and better."
Walcott added that, while the Arsenal players had discussed Rooney’s wish to leave United, he would not reveal what had been said in the dressing room at the Emirates.
'I wanted Rooney to stay in England'
"We like to keep our transfer talk to the dressing room because we respect all the other clubs. But, like everyone else, I just wanted to know what was going on when I heard about it. As an England player, I didn't want to see one of our best players going
abroad. You want to see the best players in the Premier League. I want to see Wayne playing in England, so I'm glad it's sorted.”
Walcott also claimed that Rooney was one of the greatest players he’d lined up with, saying that: "For me, he's one of the best players I've played with, alongside David Beckham. I'm sure he'll be back playing at the best of his abilities in no time."
