Arsene Wenger: Top-four league finishes vital to Arsenal
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has reinstated his hunger for trophies while maintaining that the top-four finishes he has consistently brought to the club are not to be undervalued.
Wenger's team have not lifted a trophy since winning the FA Cup at the end of the 2005 season, prior to which the Frenchman led the team to three league titles between 1998 and 2004.
On the other hand, Arsenal have not missed any of the last 15 editions of the Champions League by virtue of finishing among the top four teams in the Premier League since the 1996–97 season.
"When you look at the consistency of our performances we want to add what we miss but I believe what is important is not to get under this kind of artificial pressure," Wenger told Arsenal's official website after Abou Diaby, one of the club's midfielders,
claimed more pressure from the club's relatively undemanding fans could be useful
Champions League place the basic priority
After missing out on a top-four place only twice in ten seasons, Liverpool finished seventh in the league last year, and are currently languishing in 13th place in the table.
In light of the troubles at Liverpool, Wenger said his club's league consistency is not to be taken for granted.
"If you ask me what is the most important thing, it is to finish in the top four because that is vital for the club so let's focus on that first. All the rest you want as well but that is the most difficult today to achieve," the manager said before adding
that his team have the potential to win trophies.
"I personally believe there is more to come from this team. We know we have won nothing but we have the hunger and we have the quality and we want to do well. So let’s focus on our performances in every single game."
