Arsene Wenger admits he broke his transfer policy to land Per Mertesacker – Premier League Update
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has gone on to admit that he had to break his transfer policies in order to land German international, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Per-Mertesacker-c29680 from Werder Bremen.
The towering defender went on to join the Gunners on the dead line day of the transfer window and proved to be one of the better signings that Wenger has made in his career with http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429.
Mertesacker made his debut for the Gunners this past Saturday, as Arsenal played Swansea. The game turned out to be the Gunners first win of the Premier League season and seemed to give the team the confidence boos that they had been longing to get for so
long.
During the game Mertesacker went on to make a number of fine interceptions and his ability to run the show with his aerial ability was also quite remarkable from Arsenal’s point of view.
The Gunners are now set to feature Mertesacker in their Champions League game against Borussia Dortmund and are hoping that the player’s experience of playing in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Germany-c2904 will help them out in picking up a win over their opponents.
When talking about the capture of Mertesacker, Wenger is quoted to have said: “Usually, I look at the quality of the player and not at his size”
“Because we play a more technical game, I choose smaller players.
“But he is a calming presence, he has over 70 caps with Germany so he has experience and people forget he is only 26 years old."
Having said that, Wenger has admitted that Mertesacker’s lack of pace is something that the team will really have to look into. The defender has played in the German league prior to joining Arsenal and there is a significant difference in the pace of the
two leagues.
When talking about the difference in pace in the two leagues and the player’s past, Wenger went on to add: “He must get used to the pace of the game. It is an issue because he was surprised by that but overall he has qualities we need in our team.”
The manager then admitted that Mertesacker has the qualities and the communication skills that he wants from his defenders and hence, he can help lead Arsenal into a new era.
“He reads well the game, has good communication with the other players and he knows how important it is to communicate. That will play a big part in our season.”
It is a little too early to claim Mertesacker to be a success at Arsenal, but should he manage to maintain a high level of performances, then he could go down as one of the best buys made by Wenger.
