Arsene Wenger admits he wanted to sign Lyon’s Yoann Gourcuff – Premier League Update
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has gone on to confirm that he was on the brink of signing http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Yoann-Gourcuff-c37416 from Lyon this past summer.
The Gunners went on to lose both Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas in the last transfer window and hence everyone expected the North London club’s manager to move in and land a suitable replacement. As a result, Gourcuff was being considered as one of the players
who the manager could have made a move for.
However, despite admitting to his interest in the player, Wenger admitted that with the history of injuries that the player has, it was a tough call for him to pull out of the running to land the French international.
Wenger, when talking about the midfielder and the possibility of him signing for http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429 is quoted to have said: “I was interested in Yoann Gourcuff because at one time he was available”
“Unfortunately, we were in a hurry. We had to have players performing soon.”
The manager then revealed that the club had some bad timing, as Gourcuff was going to go under the knife, just when the team were looking to make a move for him.
“He was at that time about to have surgery. The timing was not good for us. But I had learned of his medical condition.”
“Unfortunately, we were in doubt because it was not certain if http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Samir-Nasri-c32360 and Cesc Fabregas would leave.”
Following Arsenal’s pursuit in Gourcuff ending with no avail, the team opted to make a move for http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 as a backup option. Both the players have been contributing to the team’s midfield and have
been helping out the younger players at the club and this has proven to be a very smart move on the clubs behalf.
Nonetheless, that being said, the team is still on the lookout for more reinforcements and the team’s midfield is one of the areas that need to be drastically worked on.
The team currently has a number of aged players and hence Wenger is going to be looking to make a move for a player or two as early as January.
At the moment, most experts believe that the manager made these comments about Gourcuff, in order to clear the air and to get his point across, which states that he is going to be in the market for the player in the near future, whether that be January or
at the end of the current season.
