Arsene Wenger and Roy Keane add their two cents on the Wayne Rooney issue
The speculation of Wayne Rooney is so huge that it has got everyone talking, Arsenal manage Arsene Wenger has come forward with his opinion on the whole issue and said that as far as he is concerned Rooney would stay at his current club.
There have been strong rumours linking Rooney to a move for Real Madrid of Manchester City, the whole issue surfaced when Wayne was not picked for the match against West Brom on the weekend. And since then it has been speculated that the relationship between
the striker and the manager has turned sour.
Arsene Wenger who has been at Arsenal since 1996 has seen many ups and downs at Manchester United, and said that there is too much hype being created basically over nothing. He added that when Ferguson left Rooney out off the first XI on the weekend he may
have had other reasons, and the tabloids have just blown the whole issue out of proportion.
Wenger said that he does not see Rooney leaving Manchester United over this minor issue, and said that he was certain that when the dust settles Rooney would still be wearing the Red of United. While talking to a British newspaper the French manager said
that Rooney is the sort of player who is just build to be at Manchester United, and he does not see him parting ways with the Red Devils.
Wenger said: "Rooney is a great player. I am convinced he will stay at Manchester United because it is his club.”
"They have the power to keep him. When you give a great player a rest, you have a story. Rooney is Rooney. He will stay where he is."
The current contract for the 24-year-old runs out at the end of next season, Wenger said that the delay in signing the contract has surprised him as well. But he is certain that there is nothing between Rooney and Ferguson that cannot be worked out. Talking
from his own experience ‘The Professor said that he has had his share of disputes with players, but nothing cannot be worked out by clear dialogue.
Arsene Wenger went on to say that he has been managing for a while, but has rarely seen a player like Wayne Rooney. He added that when it actually comes to making a choice for Rooney there would only be 3 or 4 clubs in the list. So there would not be much
debate over where he would go, as it would not be a financial choice.
The Gunners boss insisted that Rooney would turn around and say that Manchester United is his home and he would be staying there.
Meanwhile Rooney’s former captain Roy Keane has said that Rooney should make sure that he puts his personal interest first.
Roy Keane, who decided to call it a day after 12 years at old Trafford in 2005 after a spat with Ferguson, said that it is normal for player to have problems with the manager and it happens all the time.
Keane said that Rooney is at a time where he has the opportunity and the potential to go on and achieve great things. Keane said that Wayne should consider all the pros and cons of his decision and make sure he makes the right call at the end of the day.
If one looks back at history of the club and Ferguson, no player has survived after having differences with the boss. Roy Keane was the last player to have been sidelined but before him the prime examples were David Beckham and Jaap Stam. Ferguson always
said no one is bigger than the club, and he did not want to have someone in the team who believes he has become too big to be a United player.
So it would be interesting to wait and watch which way this whole situation turns, if one looks at the track record of Ferguson then Rooney should be a goner. But on the other hand, looking at the current state of the team Ferguson needs Rooney more than
he ever needed Keane, Beckham or Stam.
