Arsene Wenger believes Arsenal season was not a disaster: EPL News
Arsene Wenger is insistent that his team’s season was not a disaster, despite Arsenal ending yet another season without any piece of silverware. On top of that, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429 may also have to play a pre-qualifier for Champions League next season.
This is the 6th consecutive season where Arsenal have not managed to win a trophy, the season did not look so bad just couple of months ago when the team was active on all three fronts; Premier League, UEFA Champions League, FA Cup and the Carling
Cup. But two horror weeks for Gunners saw them knocked out of three competitions and lagging behind in the Premier League race.
Arsenal have developed this tendency to just fade away at the tail end of the season, and once again they have lost 3 out of their last four games. That has enabled Manchester City to close in on the 3rd spot and Citizens have a great chance to
get the automatic Champions League spot on the final day.
If City do take over Arsenal for the 3rd spot, that would mean that Wenger’s men would have to play a two-legged tie before UEFA Champions League 2011-2012 begins.
It has been a case of so close yet so far for Arsenal, they were favourites to win their first title in half a decade in the Carling Cup final. But they were outdone by some resolute play by the un-fancied Birmingham team and some irresponsible display from
their own goalkeeper.
"It is more a big frustration because we have the feeling that we were very close in all the competitions and we missed out by very little," said the Arsenal manager. "We cannot say we are happy, but as well we cannot say that it is a disaster."
Arsenal had become firm favourites to win the league when they beat Manchester United, but they just could not maintain their form. The worst part is that they lost big games against lesser oppositions and won their games against the big teams.
"Overall I think that is the closest we have been to winning the championship in recent years and that is why it is even more frustrating because if you look at the way we lost the games in the decisive moments, it is sure that we need to add some maturity
to our team," added Wenger.
The Frenchman though, insists that the team is on the right track and if they continue to play in the same vein, success will come. Arsene Wenger’s job for now is safe, but he will have his hands full in the summers as he looks to hold on to some of the
big names in his team.
Lack of trophies has meant that players are lacking motivation and are looking for greener pastures. Cesc Fabregas is one player who is expected to hand in a transfer request and move to his boyhood club http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Barcelona-c38604 in the summer, and it is public knowledge
that even Real Madrid are itching to get their hands on the Spaniard.
