Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has gone on to admit that the experience that Per Mertesacker has of playing against Borussia Dortmund, can help the Gunners get the better of their opponents when the two sides face off in the UEFA Champions League.
Prior to joining Arsenal, Mertesacker used to play for Werder Bremen and during his stay with the German club, he often faced off against Dortmund. Now Wenger is hoping that the defender can help shine some light on the situation, in order for Arsenal to
better prepare for their upcoming opponents.
Wenger, when talking about Mertesacker and his ability to communicate with the rest of the Arsenal squad is quoted to have said:
“Mertesacker knows the stadium well and German football well”
“He is strong and talks, he communicates.”
The manager then went on to admit that the team has been suffering in the Premier League for quite some time now. At the same time, Wenger believes that one of the reasons for the form that the team has shown, is due to the win over Udinese. However, the
Frenchman has admitted that should Arsenal go on and beat Dortmund, the team could get a confidence boost that could help them perform even better in the coming weeks.
“The Champions League qualifiers had a big impact on our Premier League performances,” Wenger added.
The manager then admitted that the team had been going through a lot, especially following the departure of two of their top players, followed by successive defeats to two of their toughest opponents, really messed with the team’s mentality.
“I think we were disturbed by two things – the players who were not with us [Cesc Fabregas and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 and [Manchester] United.”
He then ended by concluding that the upcoming game against Dortmund would be the first real test that the team would have to face following all the changes that have taken place.
“We have a big game on Tuesday against a very big side. It’s a massive game and a chance to show what we can do. It’s a first big test.”
