Arsene Wenger believes win over Manchester City will be key moment in Arsenal's season
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes that his side’s win over Manchester City on Sunday, 24 October, will prove to be an important moment in his side’s season.
The Gunners went into the match knowing that defeat would leave them eight points behind Chelsea and six behind City.
However, goals from Samir Nasri, Alex Song and Nicklas Bendtner after City’s Dedryck Boyata was sent off in the opening stages were enough to secure a 3-0 victory and ensure they ended the round of fixtures five points behind the Blues.
As a result, Wenger says that his men have received a psychological boost as Arsenal remain strong contenders in the title race.
'Coud not afford a defeat'
He told the club’s official website that: "It was certainly a pivotal moment of our season because we could not afford a defeat. To keep in touch with the top teams and to go out and have a victory was mentally very important for the team. Overall I believe
it is a consequence of intelligent attitude and good team and collective spirit — that’s why we got the result.
"Even though it was under special circumstances I still believe it was difficult to beat Manchester City, even though they played with ten men. Because we as well played many times with ten men and we still have not lost the game."
An additional boost for the North London club came in the form of two key players — winger Theo Walcott and striker Bendtner — making a return from injury.
Wenger added that: "I always spent a lot of time to convince everybody (that Arsenal have a strong squad). Now I think people realise when everybody is fit.
"Remember we still have Thomas Vermaelen, Robin van Persie and Aaron Ramsey out and all these players will come back. I am convinced we have a very strong squad."
