Arsene Wenger blasts two-faced Chelsea
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has accused Chelsea of hypocrisy after the reigning English champions spent a total of 76.5 million pounds during the final days of the January 2011 transfer window.
The Blues spent the staggering sum on the duo of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Fernando-Torres-c13707 in a bid to retain their Barclays Premier League crown in the 2010-11 season.
Many believe the move to be a huge statement of intent from the Blues; however, Arsene Wenger was not impressed. The Gunners boss criticised Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich for his two-faced tactics.
Abramovich had earlier announced his support for Union of European Football Association’s financial fair-play policy, but took a complete U-turn with his big money signings of Luiz and Torres.
The financial fair play policy, which comes into effect from the 2011-12 season, forces a club to balance the books before they can spend any money on new players. The Blues announced losses of 70 million pounds before spending a further 76 million pounds
on new signings, leaving Arsene Wenger questioning Abramovich’s loyalties.
Speaking on Chelsea’s spending spree during the January transfer window, the Arsenal manager said, “Chelsea supported UEFA's financial fair-play proposals but in the morning they announced a £70m loss and in the afternoon they buy £75m worth of players.
Where's the logic in that? It's hard to guess.”
He added, “Officially they vote for financial fair play but they can explain why they have done this much better than I can.”
UEFA released a statement on Monday acknowledging the frantic activity on the final day of the January transfer window. The governing body reiterated the rules of the financial fair play policy, saying that as long as long as clubs can balance their books,
they are free to spend whatever they wish.
The statement said, “The financial fair play rules do not prevent clubs from spending money on transfers themselves but rather require them to balance their books at the end of the season. It is therefore difficult to comment on any individual situation
without knowing the long-term strategy of each club.”
