Arsene Wenger insists Arsenal will not sign players in January (Part 1)
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has gone ahead and stated that the team will respect their designated budget during the winter break, and as a result might not make any new signings. However not many people were surprised by the managers comments, as over
the course of the last decade the manager has built a reputation of developing young players, rather than investing big money in world class talents.
However over the course of the last five years, this policy has managed to backfire on the Gunners boss, as the team has now gone five seasons without a single trophy. Arsenal who are considered to be one of the best teams in Europe last tasted success in
May 2005, but ever since then the team has had a lot hits and misses along the way. Nonetheless the blame for the team’s inability to land any silverware has fallen on the shoulders of Wenger, and he has faced some heavy criticism for his inability to make
quality signings in the transfer windows.
However Wenger does not seem to have been affected by these criticisms, as the manager says that the only reason he is doing what he is doing is because he believes in financial fair play.
In a recent interview Wenger is said, "We respect our budget. You look at clubs who lose £100million or £150million and if we do that, then we go bust. It's as simple as that. We pay what we can afford."
The Gunners boss added that, "I'm amazed that people are amazed that we do that. I think what is surprising is that people don't respect that. The beauty of the competition and this club is to be successful while respecting the financial balance. People
will maybe realise one day that it's not as easy to stay at the top and as well to cope with financial compulsories that you have at the top."
He also said that the critics should turn their attention to big-spending clubs like http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786. Wenger seems to be rather stubborn about his team's transfer policy.
According to most experts, it is still unclear as to what exactly the manager is saving the clubs funds for. Not only are Arsenal one of the few teams that managed to make a profit this last fiscal year, but they are also a team that have almost never spent
big in the transfer window.
So far the biggest signing that the club has made, has been of Slyian Wiltord, who cost the team a mere eleven and a half million pounds. Apart from Wiltord it is rumoured that http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Andrei-Arshavin-c5771 also cost the team around the same price, but since the real
numerical value of the transfer was never revealed, it is almost impossible to say if Arshavin was the team’s most expensive signing ever.
