Arsene Wenger insists that the pressure is on at Arsenal
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has insisted that he is not resting on his laurels at the club after failing to win any silverware in the last five years.
After winning three league titles and four FA Cup trophies during his first nine years at the club, Wenger has failed to land any title since 2005, when Patrick Vieira lifted the cup trophy after a dramatic final against Manchester United.
Some have argued that the Frenchman is too comfortable at the club. Arsenal has no intention of finding a replacement for Wenger and has agreed to the manager's strategies on both transfer spending and youth policy in recent years.
"Yes [there is added pressure]," Wenger told Arsenal's official website, insisting that the club has high expectations of his team.
"There is, as well, a lot of demands from people who know you are at the top and they try always to find your weakness. It is because that is always the reproach you get, but you have, as well, experience enough in our job-people always wonder what you have
not done."
The 61-year-old said such scrutiny is part of everyday life at a football club, adding that it's such criticism that fuels his team's hunger for trophies.
"That’s what we want to do and we want to achieve. We want to respond with the maximum commitment to the demands of people. We want to go as high as we can."
Wenger's team has been among the top four teams in the league in the past five seasons, during which they have reached the Champions League and Carling Cup finals.
"People forget that we have been at the top every year, but we want to add what people want from us and we want as well. It is very difficult to respond to that, the only thing I can promise is that we will try to give our best in every competition."
