Arsene Wenger tips Andy Carroll for England call-up
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has tipped Newcastle United striker Andy Carroll for a call-up to the England national team.
The 21-year-old frontman netted the only goal in the 1-0 English Premier League win over the Gunners at the Emirates on Sunday, 7 November, with England manager Fabio Capello watching from the stands.
Capello will name his next squad on Saturday for the friendly game against France on 17 November. With regular England strikers Wayne Rooney, Darren Bent and Jermain Defoe ruled out of the fixture due
to injury, Carroll has a good chance of being called up.
Carroll has been in good form this season, having netted six goals in 11 league games, including a hat-trick in the 6-0 demolition of Aston Villa.
When asked by reporters if Carroll was ready to play for his country at senior level, Wenger said that: "I think so."
'Carroll has improved tremendously in last year'
"He has presence, charisma, confidence and is intelligent on the ball. I had doubts about him when I saw him a year ago but he has improved tremendously."
Despite Carroll’s good start to the campaign on the pitch, he has been at the centre of controversy for his off-the-field antics.
He was told to live with club captain Kevin Nolan as part of a bail agreement after being charged with assault. He pleaded guilty to another charge of assault following an incident which took place in
Newcastle, for which he was fined £1,000.
Though Carroll has yet to play for England at senior level, he has featured for his country at various youth levels. He won eight caps and scored four goals at Under-19 level, while he has made five appearances
for the Under-21s and netted two goals since making his debut against Holland in August 2009.
