Arsene Wenger's new contract worth £6m per year
Arsene Wenger’s recently-signed new contract will see him earn £6m per year as manager of English Premier League giants Arsenal, it has been reported.
The 60-year-old Frenchman has penned a three-year extension which will keep him at the Emirates Stadium until 2014 while he is now the second highest-paid boss in the league after Chelsea’s Carlo Ancelotti. Football website Goal reports that the deal is believed to contain a clause which means he is paid a bonus for ensuring Champions League qualification, a feat Wenger has achieved for the past 12 seasons.
The contract means that Wenger, who has been at the North London club since 1996, has been rewarded with a 20 per cent pay rise on his previous deal, estimated to have been worth around £5m per year. He is also now the highest earner of any of the employees at the club having overtaken first-team captain Francesc (‘Cesc’) Fabregas, with the Spaniard earning around £110,000 per week — or £5.7m across the year.
Despite having failed to bring any silverware to the Emirates for the last five years, the board have been pleased with Wenger’s work in keeping Arsenal among the elite of English football and helping to make the club one of the most valuable in world football — their net worth was estimated by Forbes to be around $1181m in April this year.
The deal was announced ten days ago, on the eve of Arsenal kicking off their EPL campaign with a 1-1 draw away to Liverpool. Wenger’s earnings place him above Roberto Mancini (Manchester City), Sir Alex Ferguson (Manchester United) and Roy Hodgson (Liverpool) as one of the highest-earning coaches in football while Jose Mourinho — who is believed to be on a contract worth around £8.5m per year after joining Real Madrid in May — is the only manager who is paid significantly more on the world stage.
