Arson Squad retired at the age of 9, while incurring an injury at Gulfstream Park
Jay Em Ess Stable owned Arson Squad said Au Revoir to his racing career when trainer Richard Dutrow announced that the 9-year-old son of Brahms, out of mare Majestic Fire by Green Dancer, will be retired due to an injury he suffered while working out at Gulfstream Park.
Arson Squad broke down right before completing his workout session, and most likely will make a full recovery, but still, the multiple Grade 2 winner is retired from racing for good.
The Pennsylvania bred gelding last appeared on the race track was when he finished third to winner, Ron the Greek, and runner up, Inherit the Gold, in the Queens County Stakes at Aqueduct race track on 10 December, 2011.
The winning time of the 1 3/16 mile race was 1 minute and 56.84 seconds.
“He might have to undergo surgery, but Dr. (Larry) Bramlage said he should be okay,” Dutrow told.
“He was such a special horse to be around, and one of our best friends here at the barn. But out on the track, he was all race horse and the kind you want to have bedded down in your barn. Now, he gets to retire and just hang out the right way the rest of his life.”
Lightly raced in the year 2011, Arson Squad managed 3 starts and out of those he finished third quiet consistently, in fact in three starts he finished third and once off the board, a fifth place finish in the Three Coins Up Stakes at Belmont Park.
In the year 2010, Arson Squad posted back to back wins in two Grade 3 events.
He started off with the Grade 3 Skip Away Stakes at about 1 3/16 miles and then registered a win in the Grade 3 Alysheba Stakes at Churchill Downs.
The gelding’s major victories included a win in the Grade 2 Swaps Breeders’ Cup when he was 3 years old , and at 4, he bagged the Grade 2 Meadowlands Handicap.
He ended up with a career earning of $1,190,181 and out of his 35 career starts, Arson Squad went on to win 9, finished as a runner up once, and third 8 times.
