Art Historian?

I've recently become interested in taking up a career such as an art historian or some type of career that I have access to look at pieces and find symbolic meanings and messages that the artist wanted to portray. Can someone explain some of the pros and cons of this type of career and what classes would be good to take in college if i were to follow through with this? also any interning job recommendations?
