Art Hovhannisyan to defend undefeated streak against Miguel Acosta – Boxing News
Art Hovhannisyan, the undefeated Armenian pounder, will take on most probably the toughest opponent of his career Miguel Acosta, the former WBA world lightweight champion, in a 10-round non-title bout, which will be held on July 20, 2012.
The duo will headline the pay-per-view organised and promoted by Gary Shaw of Gary Shaw Productions. The event will be televised live from Chumash Casino in Santa Ynez, California, United States.
In addition, the fight card will also have Roman Morales take on Alexis Santiago in a non-title eight-round bout, co-headlining the showdown.
For Art, the bout is definitely a significant one, as this will be the second time he will defend his undefeated streak against a pugilist of high-calibre and talent. Also known as ‘Lionheart’, Art will enter his career’s 17th bout, boasting 14 wins and
just 2 draw decisions.
Currently ranked as the 40th best super featherweight in the world, Art has collected eight of his total wins by knocking the opponent out cold. While sharing his excitement and bit analysis on Miguel, Art stated, “Acosta was on his way to beating Brandon
Rios until he ran out of gas. Everyone knows he can fight at the championship level so when I beat him, I too will be considered viable at the championship level. A win against Acosta gets me closer to that world title shot.”
Art’s Friday night opponent, Miguel, 34, will enter his career’s 37th bout. The Venezuelan has collected 23 of his total 29 wins by knocking opponents out, the reason why he is feared as one of the best pounders in the division.
Despite the fact that Acosta secures 14th spot in the divisional rankings, Miguel is coming off a dismal loss to Richard Abril. Before that Miguel also tested his luck by taking on Brandon Rios.
Unfortunately, Acosta lost the Rios-bout as well. On the paper, the stats and technical aspects clearly show that Miguel will win the bout but still the odds are in favour of the undefeated Art.
While expressing his views, Miguel stated, “I’ve been in this situation before, fighting an undefeated fighter with all his fans attending. What they don’t realize is that I’m going to spoil the party. Hovhannisyan is a good fighter, but he’s not on that
championship level. I’m motivated to end his unbeaten streak.”
