Question:

Art commission question?

Don't know if this is the right place for this question, but -

I'm just starting to take art commissions. My art is drawn directly into Photoshop with a tablet. Now if someone commissions me, do I just send them the file and let them print it out? It seems kind of pointless for me to print out the image myself and mail it to them, but I heard some artists do that. I would understand if it was traditional media, but mine isn't. Any advice?

  1. I'm in the process of commissioning some art, and the artist I am working with had also never taken on a commission before.  Although he is doing more traditional art (painting) he is also doing a lot of concept work on the PC/Mac.

    In our agreement, I keep all produced works (softcopy and of course the canvas he is producing), including all copyrights associated with the work.

    if i was commissioning something done purely on a PC/Mac, I would ask for the softcopy definitely, but I think you can also offer options, e.g.

    $ 10 for printing on a Size X matt paper;

    $ 15 for printing on a Size X photo paper;

    $ 30 for printing on a Size X canvas...

    You get the idea.  That way you can charge your base price, and offer options to allow you to earn a little more and customise the finish for your client.

    Good luck, and I hope it works out.  Congratulations on taking your first commission!  : )
