  2. Basically, those things in Museums that look like 3 year olds drew it... that is because over time we evolved into obsessing over reality and things that look real.  Then, out of no where, people began to change, and go backwards.  The childhood of people became discreet, making it hard to live it.  When they hit a certain age, and began to paint, they were acting out of childhood losses, first experiments.  There is so much beauty behind it, and so much emotion.  That's why critisizing work like that is hard, but when someone is intentionally trying to draw something realistic and it looks like c**p, it's easy to say.

If you're TRYING to go abstract, and clearly, it's a try-hard piece of work, then critisizing becomes difficult also.

Critics have every right to critisize what they see, and what they feel the meaning is behind each work.  Besides, it's their job, who are you to care?

  3. You don't judge if art is good or not anymore.  The whole object of the artist making art is to get a reaction out of the viewer, ideally one that causes you to look at their work longer.

Personally I agree that artist are getting lazy (hence the work looks like a three yer old did it), but anything and everything can be considered art.  Art is in the eye of the beholder, it is an opinion, not a fact.

  4. Pick out an abstract artists and learn about what he or she is dealing with. I'd suggest you do some research on the Myartspace Blog. There are several abstract artists in that interview series and it might help you to relate to abstract art in general.
