Art institute. did i make a mistake?

Well my second quarter is bout to start in the art institute of las vegas pretty soon. im trying to get a ba in media arts and animation. i have a big passion for art and people i talked with says art institute is not a good school to go to for that. the ideas that were suggested to me was move back to cali and go to an reputable art school like pasadena art or otis. to make that transition, however, is very difficult for me to make at the moment. there are no art schools here in las vegas other than ai or unlv and i do not want to go through the long process of community college. i am determined to make a name for myself in the art world but i dont know if going to this school is the right way to go. i get this wierd feeling i made a bad call for some reason. any opinions? opinions and suggestions will be a welcomed insight. please let me know what you think rather it be neg or pos.
