Artemio Reyes grabs impressive unanimous decision win over Enrique Gutierrez – Boxing News
Artemio Reyes, the former WBC FECARBOX welterweight champion, stilled his critics by grabbing an impressive unanimous decision win over Enrique Gutierrez, in an eight-round bout held on June 22, 2012.
The non-title bout took place at the Doubletree Hotel, Ontario, California, United States, headlining the fight card. The showdown was organised and promoted by Ken Thompson of Thompson Boxing Promotions. The event also had Aalan Martinez taking on Ramon
Valadez in a non-title super featherweight bout while constituting the co-main event.
Reyes, 25, was entering his career’s 18th bout, coming off a first-round technical knockout loss to Alan Sanchez. The Californian lad came under severe criticism after his last loss, as he was unable to put forth any kind of resistance especially in front
of a pugilist with considerably less experience.
Considering his last loss, Artemio was eager to make a comeback on the win track. His Friday night opponent, Enrique, proved to be an easy target for the Californian. Also known as Scorpion, Enrique was entering his career’s 15th bout.
The 28-year-old was not only overshadowed by Reyes' experience but was also coming off a four-bout lose streak. During the whole bout, it was Reyes who set and successfully controlled the pace of the bout.
Artemio did not give Enrique any kind of leverage in fact pummelled and battered the latter with sheer force. Gutierrez did strive hard to retaliate but all his efforts went in vain as his every jab was emphatically countered by Reyes.
Both men exchanged substantial number of blows but it was Reyes who threw raw-powered jabs and continuously targeted Enrique’s head. From the sixth round and onwards it seemed as if Gutierrez has lost all his gas.
Enrique started to get sluggish so much so that he even hardly defended himself and just kept on receiving Reyes punches on his body and face. The eight-round clash ended and it was Reyes who rose at the occasion clearly by collecting 80-72 on all three
cards.
After the bout, Artemio stated, “I expected him to last all eight rounds. I hit him with a lot of shots up stairs, he wouldn’t go down so I knew it was going to be an eight-round fight.”
The proud winner further added, “I wanted to go out there and prove that my last fight was a fluke. That I haven’t lost a step in the game. I dominated him from the outside and on the inside.”
Reyes, who has collected his 16th win, admitted that Enrique possesses a tough chin and stated, “He was a tough guy. He took everything that I had.” With this win Artemio, also known as ‘King’, is back on the win track whereas Enrique has unfortunately received
his fifth consecutive loss.
