Artemis Racing pulls out of race after Peninsula Petroleum collision on Day 2: 2011 RC44 Sweden Cup
Home favourites Artemis Racing couldn’t continue their sail in the third race of Day 2 of 2011 RC44 Sweden Cup, as they collided with Great Britain’s Peninsula Petroleum and received severe damage. The collision made them pull out of the third race and tumble
down at number nine while Peninsula Petroleum continued their sail for the rest of the day.
Artemis Racing sailed convincingly in the first two races of the day, clinching a fourth and a fifth place under ideal wind conditions. The Swedish yacht collided with their opponent just before the preparatory signal of the third race. Artemis Racing received
a hole in their starboard and had to pull out of third race and although Peninsula Petroleum crumpled their bow crash box, they were able to compete in the competition.
While speaking to the local media about the accident, Artemis Racing helmsman Torbjorn Tornqvist said, “Artemis Racing had two good races this morning finishing third and fifth. Most unfortunately, prior to the start of race four we were involved in a collision
with Peninsula Petroleum, which resulted in serious damage to our RC44. The boat has been hauled out and we are currently assessing the damage.”
Peninsula Petroleum’s tactician Inaki Castaner said, “We were on starboard tack and we didn’t see Artemis and they didn’t see us.”
