  1. Moulting (technically known as 'ecdysis') is more dangerous for arthropods than for birds. Birds merely lose their feathers, whereas arthropods lose their exoskeleton, which leaves them vulnerable and much less protected. Birds' feathers have no immediate protective function, so moulting does not present such a great danger.
