Abraham fusses over inactivity, doubts Froch injury
The verbal feud between German super middleweight Arthur Abraham and British-based Carl Froch has taken another turn.
Abraham is anxiously awaiting a fight date with Froch after their October 2 bout in Monaco was postponed due to a back injury sustained by Froch. The blow added to the series of setbacks the Super Six tournament has dealt with in recent months.
A tentative date has been given as November 27.
Abraham suggested the bigger concern was his professional inactivity. He said: "I have not been in the ring for six to seven months and in my experience it becomes tough. I don't like such breaks [in time]. Only when Edison Miranda broke my jaw, I had an
eight month break. I'm used to boxing every three to four months.”
Aside from commenting on his frustration with remaining inactive, Abraham also speculated on the authenticity of Froch’s injury. “The opponent said that he had a sore back. This was the reason for postponing our meeting. He says he is injured, but in the
end we can't be fully sure. When a person does not want to box, he always finds an excuse. You can always go to the doctor and get a letter."
Abraham suggested Froch was mentally devastated from his defeat to Mikkel Kessler days ago and that his mental insecurities may be the reason for the postponement. Froch replied that if anyone was mentally impaired, it was Abraham, who lost his last fight
by disqualification.
Promoters and broadcasters are looking into having the fight in Helsinki, Finland.
"The Super Six is a very interesting tournament,” Abraham mused. “But there are drawbacks. In particular, the management of it is strongly dependent on the boxers.”
The postponement of Abraham-Froch is the latest blow to the Super Six tournament. Last month WBC titlist Mikkel Kessler withdrew from the tournament after an eye injury impeded participation. As well a bout between Andre Dirrell and Andre Ward for the
WBA and WBC titles which was supposed to take place this weekend has been postponed indefinitely.
