Arthur will have to overcome "cultural issues" while coaching Aussies, says http://www.senore.com/Cricket/John-Marshall-Buchanan-c68302 - Cricket News Update
The former Australian cricket coach, John Buchanan, has warned his incumbent successor, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mickey-Arthur-c1969 that he would have to overcome a lot of cultural issues during his coaching tenure with the Kangaroos.
Arthur, the 43-year-old former http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757 coach, replaced Tim Nielson on Tuesday, November 22.
Soon after his appointment, Buchanan stepped forward to warn the South African about the issues he can face during his four-year stay in Australia. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Buchanan-c48808 said that the former Proteas first-class cricketer would have to make a lot of adjustments, if he
is to return successful in his new role.
"No matter where you go ... there are cultural issues, no question about that -- even down to your language and your body language," said Buchanan, who remained the Australian coach for eight years (1999-2007).
The Queenslander, who is http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754’s director of cricket these days, said that since he is going to be the first ever foreign coach of the Australian national cricket team, he would have to be very careful while making decisions in his new role as the
social and cultural issues can influence his performance.
"Those things take time to be understood and merge into a new system. It is understanding how people tick ... and is that something to do with being in a cricket team or something to do with the country?
"Therefore, you have to be reasonably careful when you make some decisions,” said the former http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 coach, who led the mighty Aussies to their hat-trick of world cups.
After his retirement as the Australian coach, Buchanan also had a brief coaching stint with the IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders; however, it was not as successful as he had with the Australia team. Buchanan reckons the reason behind his comparatively
less memorable experience with foreign teams could be the cultural difference.
“I had some less memorable experiences in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Middlesex-c817 (in 1998) for those very reasons," said Buchanan who had played just seven first class and one List A match during his cricketing career, spanning 12 months.
New Zealand will be touring Australia this summer and both Arthur and Buchanan will be dressing room rivals during the upcoming two-match Test series.
