Artic Fern upsets Hollywood Hit in the King Corrie Stakes at Woodbine on 21 September
Trained by Michael Keogh for owner Gustav Schickedanz, the 4-year-old colt, Artic Fern, unbeaten till April, winning everything his connections laid in front of him, took on the rivals of the $112,000 King Corrie Stakes on 21 September, 2011, at Woodbine.
The son of Langfuhr had a huge predicament in the shape of a 3 to 1 favourite, Hollywood Hit, who darted from the gates in the six furlong dash, and soon assumed the lead, getting himself into a position from where he could cruise home.
Trained by Terry Jordan for Peter Redekop B. C Ltd, the 5-year-old gelding, Hollywood Hit, was coming off back to back wins in Karl Boyes Memorial Stakes at Presque Isle Downs on 22 June, 2011.
He destroyed his competition over the Presque Isle Downs' synthetic surface under jockey J McAleney, defeating Chief of Affairs and Ravalo on the way, with a winning time of 1 minute and 2.98 seconds.
The son of Cactus Ridge, out of Solid Hit by Time for a Change, Hollywood Hit took on another racing endeavour, as he participated in the Bold Venture Stakes at Woodbine on 20 July, 2011.
Over a distance of 6 ½ furlongs, Hollywood Hit was victorious again under the same jockey, J McAleney, as he downed Signature Red and Riding The River with a winning time of 1 minute and 14.76 seconds.
However, little did Terry Jordan know that a younger horse would kill the winning run of his older, yet pacey horse.
In the King Corrie Stakes, when Hollywood Head parted from the lot to gain the lead, Artic Fern came from behind and yelled uncle to his older rival.
Along the inside, Artic Fern set brisk fractions of 22.39 seconds for the quarter mile, and then started the grinding duel between Hollywood Hit and Artic Fern, knowing whoever lets go a little will wash his hands off the race.
Around the turn when they reached the half mile marker in 44.55 seconds, Artic Fern started to edge away from Hollywood hit and around the final sixteenth, Artic Fern completed the upset win by 1 length, covering the distance in 1 minute and 9.79 seconds.
