Question:

Artificial Intelligence???? What exactly does this mean?

Is artificial intelligence possible? I mean if scientists use mathematics to create an artificial intelligence program, wouldn;t the same program then be able to predict all the decisions that the A.I would make? Further if what they call A.I can be created under these rules doesn;t that mean that in theory mathematics could predict all decsions we as humans will make? Someone with knowledge in this area (as admitedly I have none) would be very helpful and get 10 points

  1. Artificial intelligence boils down to independent decision making by a machine.  The human mind makes countless decisions based on external factors (the environment) and internal factors (mood, emotions, motivations, goals).  Think of the number of decisions made by someone on a trip to the grocery store.  Now imagine a machine or robot figuring out we are out of milk, checking what other food supplies are low, looking at the sales pages, making a list, finding the car keys, driving in traffic to the store, discovering an item the store does not have and calling home to find a suitable substitute, deciding the strawberries are too expensive, and on and on.

Math is very good at predicting decisions that people will make.  The operative word here is people, not person.  It is possible that AI can advance to the point where it improves itself, with no longer any input from humans.  Some people are predicting such a turning point and calling it "The Singularity".  The theory is that once AI takes on a life of it's own, change will be so accelerated it is pointless to predict life beyond that point.

But as to the predictability of that point or a near term exponential leap in AI capability you should study the concept of the N-P Complete problem in Computer Science.  It essentially tells us that our greatest imagineable processing capacity can not solve equations that involve analyzing all permutations of a very large problem (with in a useful amount of time)

AI will get better and better.  But until something new and unexpected comes along (and it always does, perhaps the 'singularity' is as close as some predict), AI will not proceed beyond very clever machines that make short work of dull, tedious, or extremely precise tasks.

  2. Obviously we do not just come into the world with intelligence in fact scientists still do not understand the fundamental workings of our brain.  So until we learn how our own intelligence works, artificial intelligence is an attempt in mimicking human reactions and functions and not actual any real form of cognitive recognition.

  3. Hello , believe that i may help you as a doctor of technology.

AI at the moment is unable to move through the fact that we as humans (and animals) have free will. As every human is different, we cannot make a robot that will satisfy everybodies decision.

    for example,

You offer a robot a banana to eat. A human would take into consideration, who is offering the banana? Am i hungry? Do I like bananas etc etc. But the only way we can let a robot make a decision is if we educate it to know whether it should take the banana or not. If based on probability, lets say 7 out of 10 people take it, so the robot will randomly take it 7 out of 10 times, this also goes against free will as humans choices are not always affected byu probability.

Mathematics has been created by man so it does not always portray natural intelligence as it is.

  4. This site is devoid of intelligence, artificial or otherwise.
