As 2010 Formula One season unwrapped for Red Bull... (Part 2)
The Formula One season's next race, British Grand Prix was yet another drama-filled event of 2010. As only one round back Mark Webber had faced an unfortunate accident, so his damaged car got new front wings. But after the practice sessions, the team handed
those new front wings to his team mate, Sebastian Vettel.
This action greatly offended the Australian, who then drove through the Silverstone Track in much frustration. There was no stopping for the angry driver until he saw what he wanted the most, the chequered flag. While standing at the top of the podium, the
still angry man stated, “Not bad for a number two driver!”
This was the season's second time when the heated air amongst the team members had come to the track. But, team management declared that they had never been biased between the two and the only reason behind this action was Vettel’s better position in the
points’ tally.
The team claimed that ‘air has been cleared’ and the issue is settled. Despite their consistent performances, McLaren kept leading both the charts while Red Bull kept on striving hard. The middle of the season saw yet another twist as the two Ferrari men,
after a much laidback mid season, came ahead furiously and gave a 1-2 finish to the team at the German Grand Prix. Here, Webber finished at 6th while Vettel was once again able to grab 3rd place.
With this, the shape of the battle altered completely as now the tug for title was no more between top two teams, rather it became a fight between three teams and five drivers. The twelfth race, held just before the summer break, bore fruit for the struggling
driver. After pulling hard, Webber finally got his 4th victory of the season while his teammate ended at 3rd place. With this result, the Australian driver came to the top place in the Drivers’ Championship.
While Webber enjoyed the three weeks’ summer break, Hamilton kept waiting for the next race restlessly. Only at the next race, Webber had to hand over his top position back to Hamilton as the latter ended the Belgian Grand Prix at 1st position
while the former settled for 2nd. The race also brought a lot of criticism to Vettel’s poor driving as he made a poor move and crashed with Jenson Button of McLaren whose day ended pointless. Vettel also came home without any scores.
At the Italian Grand Prix, the team scored only 18 more points as Webber parked his RB6 at 6th place while Vettel was more competitive and ended at 4th place. Monza had been better for the team as the two drivers banked another 33 points,
with Webber’s 15 and Vettel’s 18, as they ended at 2nd and 3rd places respectively.
As fifteen races of the season have already wrapped up, Webber stands at the top of the Drivers’ Championship after having bagged 202 points, followed by Alonso, who bagged 191 points. The other team driver, Sebastian Vettel stands at 4th place
with 181 points, catching the tail of Hamilton and is only 21 points adrift his teammate.
None of the two team drivers have yet been able to get hold of a World Title in their careers. They see this season as a great opportunity that none wants to miss. While at the same time, the Austrian team is also yet to claim its first world championship.
