  1. The same way as any other American -- you work to make your community better, you educate yourself, you be the change you want to see in others (to paraphrase Gandhi).

Volunteer for a nonprofit, or get involved in the political process. If you are 18, are you registered to vote, and have you ever volunteered in your local elections? Could you help others to register to vote, help them to know where and when to vote, and help them get to where they need to vote?

Any political party will welcome you as a volunteer (or, at least, they SHOULD), no matter your age. Contact whichever party you believe represents your values most. And remember that you can always change your mind.

You can also look for volunteering opportunities at nonprofit organizations, via these web sites:

    VolunteerMatch, http://www.volunteermatch.org

    Idealist, http://www.idealist.org

    Change.org, http://www.change.org

    CraigsList, http://www.craigslist.com

    Network for Good, http://www.networkforgood.org

    http://www.1-800-volunteer.org/

    ServeNet, http://servenet.org/

Also, contact your local volunteer center; you can find this via the Points of Light Foundation web site, http://www.pointsoflight.org/centers/

There's also this government sponsored site, http://volunteer.gov/gov/ which provides volunteer positions through USA federal land agencies like Fish & Wildlife, Forest Service, National Parks, etc.

If you want to be a volunteer to help with the consequences of a natural disaster, such as Hurricane Katrina, you need to register and prepare NOW. Here's a web site where you can register and start your preparation so that you can help the next time disaster strikes:

  3. i am tired when people say as an African American -  as an Asian as an whatever everyone is an American we all are the same i feel you are only cutting yourself down - i understand you are proud of your heritage and that is great but that should never make a difference in what should happen in how society sees anyone

  4. Get as much education as possible, avoid the "traps" of drugs, alcohol, babies, gangs  and unemployment.  Lead by setting a fine example to your peers.  Motivate your peers to do the same.  You sound as if you already are setting a fine example for others.  I am sure your parents are very proud of you Jasmine.

  5. I don't think race is an issue.  Get a good solid education in a field that is more related to helping then making millions.  Avoid drugs, smoking, drinking, pregnancy.  Be charitable and kind.  Take interest in things outside yourself.  Find a cause and donate your time.    Practice your faith.  Help your friends.
