Can you name the five country music legends that George makes reference to in the beginning of this song?

CHALLENGE....While we all know there is no more stars of this calliper, can you name 5 current or past stars 1990-2008, who would still qualify as "Country", who actually try to fill their shoes?

  1. no can fill their shoes - but some come pretty close (and why does it just have to be male singers????)

who george should also have mentioned:  kitty wells, patsy cline, loretta lynn, tammy wynette (well....that could have been a little bit uncomfortable), june carter cash

    current:

george strait, hank III (not everything he does/did is country, but his country stuff is great and dam but if he dont sound like his granddaddy), alan jackson, shooter jennings (getting better all the time), brooks and dunn, dwight yoakum,

    a nod to the ladies:

k.t. oslin, roseanne cash, tanya tucker, martina mcbride, pam tillis, emmy lou harris (you cant leave her out)

  2. Country Weekly magazine did an article kind of like this a few months ago.  Their question, was something more along the lines of "Who will be the next George Strait?".  Some of them that stand out in my memory are Josh Turner, Bucky Covington, and Rodney Atkins.

  3. Waylon Jennings, Jesse Colter, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash,  Merle Haggard, Conway Twitty, Roy Acuff, Carl Perkins, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis,  Charlie Thompson, Hank Williams SR, Marty Robbins, and Lefty Frizzel.  I hope I didn't leave anyone out.

I think George left out Kris Kristtoferson though!!!!

I don't think there are many out there who could fill any of those listed shoes, but these are my pick as CLOSE -

LeeAnn Woman, Alan Jackson, George Strait, Martina McBride,

  4. Waylon, Willie, Johnny, Merle, Conway.

    Challenge.

It can't be done, I can't think of anyone from 1990-2008 that could even try to fill their shoes, Randy, George Strait, Alan Jackson, RVS and a whole lot more were recording in the 80s so I wouldn't count them in your challenge.

Darlye Singletary has probably one of the best country voices to come out of the 90s but to fill their shoes, I don't think so

  5. Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard and Conway Twitty

    Challenge:

George Strait, Alan Jackson, Ricky Van Shelton, Randy Travis, and Mark Chestnutt

  6. "The outlaw who walks through Jesse's dream" - Waylon Jennings

"Red-headed stranger" - usually considered Willie Nelson (although Eddy Arnold did this song in the 50s)

"A man in black and 'Folsom Prison Blues'" - Johnny Cash

"The Okie from Muskogee" - Merle Haggard

"Or 'hello, darlin''" - Conway Twitty

CHALLENGE ANSWER:  No one.  The point of the song was that these individuals were all ORIGINALS and could NOT be replaced.  There will never be another Jimmie Rodgers, and thankfully the people Jones alluded to throughout the song decided to be THEMSELVES and NOT "another Jimmie Rodgers."  We don't need ANOTHER "Marty, Hank and Lefty."  What we DO need is for the industry called "country music" today to ACKNOWLEDGE and REVERE them.

EDIT:  Roni, the "Charlie" mentioned in the second verse was Charlie Rich.  Funny he's mentioned with Jerry Lee in that line, because the story is that Sam Phillips told Charlie Rich the only way he'd become successful is if he learned to play piano as BADLY as Jerry Lee, not as well as he naturally did!

  7.   I'm not sure if I have any of the names right, but here I go.(1)Johnny Cash,,(2) The one and only  Hank Williams SR. (3) Marty Robbins,(4) Merle Haggard.,(5) Roy Acuff. I hope that I have at least 2 or 3 names right.   The 5 stars of today I would have say  the following just maybe good but no one will ever be a good as  George Jones.(1) Garth Brooks,(2)  Alan Jackson (3)George Canyon (4) Kenny Chesney (5) Tim McGraw. These are my picks.. Have a good day     Shirley    p.s I hope that I spelled Kenny's last name    right   Oh! by the way I am an old  broad.
